Kas

Born at 22 weeks, weighing 440g (just under 1 pound) at birth. He spent over 8 months in the NICU before going home with oxygen and a G-tube.

Marquita had an uncomplicated pregnancy up until she went into preterm labor at 22-weeks. Kas was born weighing 440g. Being born at the edge of viability, she was given the option to “go with it or not” - you don't have time to think about it - you just have to make a decision. Marquita and her family decided to see what Kas would do. He had his misbehaving moments, but it was clear to the family that he was fighting, so they kept fighting for him.

How do you survive an 8 month NICU stay with your baby:

  1. Nurses - they are a combination of your best friend, your favorite teacher, and your therapist.

  2. Reading - Read, read read.

  3. Connecting with your baby when you visit can keep you going and fighting for another day.

Kas went home after 8 months with oxygen, a G-tube and a monitor. Mom got no sleep. It was so much work transitioning into the new norm with their medications and medical equipment and hospital visits. With daycare off the table, mom and dad and the rest of the family took shifts caring for Kas, working together to keep him safe at home.

Since being at home, Marquita has started Kas Kares, a non-profit geared towards advocating for preemies. She started Kas Kares to honor her 22 week baby and show the world that a 22 weeker can survive and thrive. Show the world that this is possible. Depending on where you are born, and the circumstances around the birth, statistics show us that 22 week infants have somewhere between 10-50% survival rate. Find them on Instagram @Kas_Kares17.

We wrap up the podcast with a 10 question speed round. So so fun!
