Episode 45: For the Love of the NICU: Part 1 - NICU Story

When her twins were born at 25 weeks, Lelis simply could not see how they would survive such extreme prematurity. But they did.

In this episode, we hear about her twins’ NICU journey: sepsis, NEC, ROP, BPD — all of the common complications of extreme prematurity. Now, her sons are grown, and she has spent the last nearly 15 years consulting in health advocacy to improve the outcomes of our most fragile babies.

The three things she would say to NICU parents now:

  1. You are not alone.

  2. Seek out peer support, looking beyond the walls of the hospital.

  3. You, as a parent, are important to your baby. You are essential and you have a right to be at the bedside.
